Mention Markets: Betting on What Trump (or MrBeast) Will Say
"Will Trump say word X at his rally?" "Will Elon Musk post this word this week?" Mention markets are among the most regular on Polymarket, and among the most interesting to analyse.
How they work
A mention market asks a simple question: will a public figure say (or post) a given word, in a given setting? Typical examples: a word in a Donald Trump speech, a term in MrBeast's next video, a phrase from the commentators during an NFL game, a word in Elon Musk's posts over a week.
How they settle
The rules state which event is covered, the source (video, official transcript, X account) and what counts: plurals, variants, minimum number of mentions. That is where many bets are won and lost: read the rules in full before buying.
Why good traders like them
- They come back every week: speeches, videos and posts are regular, so there are plenty of chances.
- They can be analysed: a speaker has habits, current themes and favourite expressions.
- You bet before the event: usually the day before or that morning, which makes them copyable.
How to analyse them
- Look at the person's recent speeches: which words come back, and how often.
- Factor in the news: a hot topic brings certain words back.
- Check the event's length: the longer it is, the more likely a common word gets said.
- Beware of extreme prices: at 0.95, a single miss costs twenty wins.
A specialised trader
Among the traders we verified over 12 months, -Dominus- specialises in these markets: about 38 bets a week, usually placed the day before, with 70% winning bets over their last three months. Their full history, quarter by quarter, is on their page.
Risks
A speech can be cancelled, shortened or changed; a rule can be interpreted in an unexpected way. As with any prediction market, you can lose your whole stake.
